New: Urwerk UR-101 T-REX
Urwerk has resurrected the UR-101 with another cool twist on the original model, giving it the textured skin and scaly armor they’ve used before and calling it the T-REX.
We’ve seen the return of the T-Rex to the Urwerk collection. We first saw this monster watch on the UR-105 T-REX. But this time around, the base is the UR-101 instead of the UR-105. The same hand-polished bronze and guilloché pattern is used on the case and lugs. While the UR-101 T-REX had a titanium case back, this new model has a black PVD-coated steel case back. The T-REX name also appears on the UR-100V T-REX, which also features the same design – a polished bronze guilloché case with an openwork dial instead of a case that obscures the mechanism on the dial side. We are not sure if the movement used is the same, as Urwerk has changed its movement nomenclature. The UR-100V T-REX uses the Caliber UR 12.02.
The appearance is equally intimidating. The guilloché pattern is particularly successful in presenting the scales we imagine on the prehistoric dinosaur Tyrannosaurus Rex. The bronze case, aided by hand-polishing, perfectly presents this look. Since the case is guilloché, the cutting depth is much deeper than the traditional guilloché pattern used on the dial, and the scales are very tactile, giving a strong feeling of running fingers over the body of a dinosaur. fashion men watches
The movement equipped in the UR-101 T-REX is the UR-101V, which is much simpler than the UR-5.02 used in the UR-105 T-REX. Not only does it lack a rotating cube on the hour display, it also lacks a regulating turbine to adjust the winding power of the movement.
Tremble! The latest member of the Tyrannosaurus family has made a grand appearance. Bronze carapace, primal presence, primal touch. This newcomer is not content to be seen, but demands to be touched.
The specially modified UR-101 has been transformed into an upgraded piece, with a textured skin and scaly armor covering the bezel, sides and lugs. Usually only seen on the dial, the organic guilloché pattern is carefully protected behind a sapphire crystal, here it is exposed to the touch, undisguised and deliberately inviting attention.

Living bronze.
“Bronze is a magical metal”, explains Martin Frei, URWERK co-founder and artistic director. “It reacts to touch. It’s alive. Once scratched, it re-oxidizes, and this oxidation protects it and erases the signs of time. It’s fascinating, like the natural regeneration process of the skin”, he continues.
The UR-101 is the third URWERK model to receive the T-Rex treatment. Its circular design inspires a desire for variation, providing the perfect basis for the distinctive guilloché pattern. Take a closer look: the engraved grooves start at the crown and climb at a low slope along the entire case, ending in a steeply curved slope leading to the caseback. One change of rhythm follows another, creating a complex and beautiful continuity. The ergonomics of this limited edition of 100 pieces, the UR-101 T-Rex, are inspired by the Millennium Falcon, with a focus on form and substance, surface and depth.
This UR-101 T-Rex has a diameter of 41 mm and is 11.86 mm thick at its highest point. Beyond the numbers, the feel when worn is also distinctive. Its curvature ensures a natural fit, hugging the front of the wrist and finding a small space between two bones. From there, the asymmetry of the case is revealed, slightly tilted towards the eye, with the 12 o’clock position higher than the 7 o’clock position, thanks to the addition of a “spoiler” with a crown puller that facilitates the operation of this piece. Inspired by the first UR-101, this detail further underlines its originality.

The case, made mostly of bronze, is first guilloched, then oxidized and finally brushed. Over time, the bronze will gradually change color, with the brown color becoming more pronounced, but never turning green. The same changes occur on the inside of the scales where the engraver has been used, as well as on the lugs integrated into the back of the UR-101 T-Rex, which tilt the case slightly.
This geometric engraving first appeared on the UR-105 T-Rex in 2016 and a few years later on the UR-100 T-Rex: “It’s a traditional guilloche dial pattern,” says Martin Frei. “We applied it to the entire surface of the case, right up to the edge. You can touch it. It has an animalistic, physical, almost visceral force.” A sometimes overlooked aspect of the URWERK method – the art of finishing – is on display here on a grand scale. proreviewwatch.co
A closer look at its mechanisms.
The UR-101 T-Rex is a reinterpretation of an original URWERK model and marks a return to URWERK’s roots. Equipped with two satellites, a 180-degree display and a solid snailed carrousel, this movement is a new expression of the brand’s technical “Wandering Time” hallmark. The development of the UR-1.01V movement provided co-founder and master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner with an opportunity to reminisce about the first URWERK movements. “Our initial idea was a satellite time display. Making a carrousel that is almost 150 times heavier than an isochronous movement of two hands was our first challenge. It was in my collaboration with my first watchmaking mentor, Svend Andersen, that we realised that a Maltese cross was needed to govern such a mechanism. And this was only the beginning of the challenges we have continuously set ourselves since then.”
The power of the URWERK universe lies in the collision of imagination. Between the worlds of Martin Frey and Felix Baumgartner, between the pop culture and childhood stories of their adulthood, between various cinematic, historical and literary references, the URWERK concept interpenetrates and coexists, forming a mixture of cool and underground. From dinosaur scales and the Millennium Falcon to 18th- and 21st-century watchmaking – all viewed through the prism of the brand’s 25-year existence so far – this is the essence of the URWERK style. The name evokes the Sumerian city of Ur; Urzeit for prehistory; Uhr for time (and clock); and Werk, for movement.
