Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey push the limits of ergonomics and wrist comfort with the new GMT SPORT timepiece. They invented an entirely new case form that was perfectly round when viewed from above, while showing prominent arches and ovals from other angles.
The aerodynamic properties of this timepiece’s 4 patents are enhanced by its integrated lugs and straps, resulting in a unique functional form that fits perfectly on any wrist. Back in 2015, the GMT Black paved the way for the GMT Sport. Building on this, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey invented and demonstrated their result, a lightweight and ultra-strong profiled titanium case with an oval bezel and a one-piece style lugs to showcase the new movement. Water-resistant to 100 meters, the new GMT Sport is the most sports-focused watch to date.
The movement was built from scratch – from the suspended arched bridges for the hours and minutes, to the unique 24-second tourbillon display and universal time display with a 3D globe.
The display of the GMT Sport features a classic cheap Greubel Forsey architecture, forming an open, choreographed theatre between suspension bridges, translucent wheels and a three-dimensional floating dial. In keeping with the athletic mission of this timepiece, the focus is on legibility and efficiency. Hours and minutes are indicated by concentric skeletonized hands whose curvilinear contours follow the curvature of the case and movement.
The gear train is mounted on a suspended arched central bridge with black treated openings, following the curve of the bridge, overlooking the globe to drive the hour and minute hands. The triangular tips of the arrow-shaped hands and the markings on the minute ring are enhanced with a luminous coating to ensure clear visibility in the dark.
The suspended three-dimensional display and the 11 o’clock position combine the small seconds on a large rotating disc, and the second time zone display with hands. The two coaxial displays with red triangle hour markers underline the technical content of this watch. The 72-hour chronograph power reserve (guaranteed by two coaxial barrels in series) is displayed on the sector at 3 o’clock, with its skeletonized hands and highlighted red triangle. The power-reserve differential under the arched bridges is subtly engraved with Greubel Forsey fake values. Whether visible on the dial side or hidden on the caseback side, each of the 435 components of this hand-wound movement, including the titanium bridges and bridges, meet the most demanding Greubel Forsey workshops Standards, and the best workmanship by the team.
The 24-second tourbillon is located at 1 o’clock, and its unique and highly polished tourbillon bridge has a black-finish opening. Greubel Forsey’s third fundamental invention in the field of tourbillons (after the double tourbillon 30° and the quadruple tourbillon) stands out with its 25° inclined cage completing a full revolution in 24 seconds.
The higher speed combined with the ingenious inclination of the cage significantly improves the timekeeping performance of the single tourbillon system, while having a minimum movement height. This unique, patented configuration counteracts the interference of Earth’s gravity on motion, especially in stable positions. The rotating tourbillon cage, which houses the adjustment mechanism, consists of 88 components and weighs 0.38 grams – in particular, the light-alloy pillars and titanium bridges make this feat possible.

In this dual-patented mechanism, the second time zone display on the secondary dial between 10 and 11 o’clock combines with the world time display to visually read the current time anywhere in the world.
The extraordinary innovation and dramatic spectacle of the Earth Rotating Globe – viewed from above the North Pole – completes each full counterclockwise rotation in 24 hours. Surrounded by a sapphire crystal ring with a 24-hour scale; the wearer can read local time at all longitudes, including day/night indicators (light/dark).
On the back side of the GMT Sport, the outer and central rings form the sapphire city disc, providing UTC Universal Time and Daylight Saving Time for 24 cities in the main time zones. The disc distinguishes between time zones where daylight saving time applies (light background) and time zones where daylight saving time does not apply (dark background).
Recalling the ergonomics, GMT functions using two buttons located on the left side of the case; one for selecting a second time zone and the other for synchronizing local time with global time. The titanium and rubber crown also ensures optimal settings.
